Exhibition on Mycenaean culture in the Cyclades and the Aegean.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades is organizing, in cooperation with the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation, the periodical exhibition “From the world of Homer. Tinos and Cyclades in the Mycenaean era “, which is inaugurated on Friday July 12 (at 20:00), at the Foundation’s Marble Craft Museum, at the Tower of Tinos.

The exhibition aims to demonstrate the contribution of the Cyclades to Mycenaean civilization in the Aegean, presenting, among others, unknown to the general public antiquities and composing a panorama of Mycenaean civilization in the Cyclades.

More than 150 selected objects, representative of pottery, metalwork, miniature, figurine, jewelery, reveal aspects of the admirable cultural heritage of the Mycenaean world, a source of inspiration for the top works of world literature, the Iliad and the Odyssey.

For the first time the findings of small dimensions but rare for the entire Aegean Mycenaean vaulted tomb in Agia Thekla, in the north of Tinos, are exposed to the public.

The monument was uncovered during the work on the opening of a road and its remains were excavated by the unforgettable Tchaikovsky archaeologist Georgios Despini in 1979.

Place of burial of a “aristocrats”, the tomb of Saint Thekla (13th-12th century BC) had been used for multiple burials.

It is one of only three known domed Mycenaean tombs in the Cyclades and is the only, at present, confirmed Mycenaean position on the island.

His valuable finds reveal the high cultural level of the time, highlighting aspects of Mycenaean civilization.

The exhibition also includes ancient works from other important prehistoric sites in the Aegean, namely Naxos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros, Milos, Sifnos, Thira and Kea, giving a first picture of the physiognomy and of the importance of Mycenaean civilization in the Cycladic archipelago.

The narrative, framed by audiovisual productions, compose units that illuminate the basic axes of the life of the people of the time, such as everyday life, worship, burial customs, war.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalog, published by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, with the assistance of the Cultural Foundation of the Piraeus Group.

Duration of exhibition: 13 July to 14 October 2019

Opening hours: Daily, except Tuesday, 10: 00-18: 00
